mépriser - to scorn, despise

Il méprise toute honte et toute confusion, il ne compte pour rien le péché et sa puanteur. Il ose faire en plein soleil ce que d'autres n'oseraient jamais faire.

He scorns all shame and ambiguity, he is good for nothing but sin and its stench.  He dares to do in the light of day that which others never dare to do.

souiller - to stain, contaminate

En quoi avons-nous méprisé ton nom?  Vous avez souillé mon autel en y offrant un pain souillé.

How have we scorned your name?  You have defiled my altar by offering polluted bread.

Le vin rouge peut souiller les vêtements blancs.  

Red wine can stain white clothing.

beben - to shake, quake

Die Erde bebte für ein paar Sekunden, bevor das Erdbeben vorbei war.

The earth shook for a couple of seconds before the earthquake was over.

plötzlich - sudden, suddenly

Plötzlich begann die Erde zu beben.

Soudain, la terre se mit à trembler.

schütteln - to shake, agitate, rock

Schüttelt euch die Hände und schließt Frieden.

Shake hands and make up.  [lit, end as friends]

une garderie - nursery, daycare

Je me souviens d'un petit garçon dans une garderie qui emplissait ses poches de petits jouets appartenant au milieu de garde.

I remember a little boy in a nursery who was filling his pockets with little toys belonging to the daycare center.

emplir - to fill

Le poste de soins régimentaire, une vieille grange attachée à une maison, commence à s'emplir de blessés. 

The regimental aid post, an old barn attached to a house, begins to fill with wounded.

He filled his pockets, handful after handful, gold upon gold.

arm - poor

Ich gab dem armen Mann einen Penny.

I gave the poor man a penny.

trinken - to drink

vorbei - over, ending

Ich bin froh, dass der Winter bald vorbei ist.

I am happy that winter is over soon.

wissen - to know

Ich weiß nicht, wie die Katze hereingekommen ist. 

I don't know how the cat got in. 

épaissir - to thicken

La coquille d'un escargot s'épaissit et s'allonge en s'enroulant.

Asnail's shell thickens and elongates as it rolls up.

L'escargot naît avec une coquille.  Elle est petite et molle. Il la garde toute sa vie, sans jamais en changer. 

Snails are born with a shell.  It is small and soft.  The snail keeps it all its life, never changing it.

un ormeau - an elm; an abalone

Voici la verte pelouse, entourée d'ormeaux, où nous avons dansé souvent ! 

Here is the green lawn, surrounded by elms, where we often danced!

 

La coquille d'ormeau est une merveille de la nature. À l'extérieur, celle-ci a le même aspect que la pierre, alors qu'à l'intérieur vous trouvez de magnifiques reflets irisés de nacre bleutée.

The abalone's shell is a marvel of nature.  Outside, it looks much like a stone, while inside you see magnificent iridescent glimmers of bluish mother of pearl.

la pelouse - lawn

Le jardinier tond la pelouse chaque semaine.

The gardener mows the lawn every week.

chatouiller - to tickle

J'ai ri, mais comme on rit quand on vous chatouille la plante des pieds.

I laughed, but the way you laugh when someone tickles the sole of your foot.

der Regenschirm - the umbrella

Der Wind hat meinen roten Regenschirm weggeweht.

The wind carried off my red umbrella.

leihen - to borrow

Kann ich Ihren Regenschirm ausleihen? 

Can I borrow your umbrella?

der Regenmantel - the raincoat

Ein Regenmantel ist besser als ein Regenschirm.

A raincoat is better than an umbrella.

la rancune - rancor, resentment

Ils sont naturellement non-violents, ils oublient facilement le mal enduré et ne savent pas garder la rancune ni la colère.

They are by nature non-violent; they quickly forget evil done to them and they hardly know how to hold a grudge or hang on to anger.

eine Lösung - a solution

Meine Mutter kann für jedes Problem eine Lösung finden. 

My mother can find a solution to any problem.

wirtschaftlich - economical

Ich suche nach einer wirtschaftlichen Lösung. 

I am looking for an economical solution.

la truite - the trout

Pour le dîner, je vous préparerai une belle truite grillée avec du brocoli.

I'm going to make you a nice grilled trout with broccoli for dinner.

der Ritter - the knight

Der Ritter hat den Schlag mit seinem Schild abgewehrt.

The knight blocked the blow with his shield.

tranchant - sharp

J'ai besoin d'un couteau tranchant pour couper cette viande.

I need a sharp knife to cut this meat.

der Schriftsteller - the writer

Ich möchte Schriftsteller werden wenn, ich groß bin.

I want to be a writer when I grow up.

répandre - to spread, promulgate

Bien que les « Jours de l'an » tombent rarement à la même date d'un calendrier à l'autre, on remarque une relative concordance entre pays.  En effet, la « disparition » de la végétation durant l'hiver et sa « renaissance » au printemps a nourri le concept très répandu de la « renaissance cyclique » de l'année. 

Although "new year's" days rarely fall on the same date on various calendars, it is worth noting a certain congruence among countries.  Indeed, the "disappearance" of vegetation during winter and its "rebirth" in the spring has prompted the widely-promulgated concept of the "cyclical rebirth" of the year.
